Make Money Blogging – An Interview

Hey y’all,

I’m so excited today because I’m back with a FIRST EVER interview on Trend Keeper.

I was browsing twitter a few days ago when I came across Krista Aoki. She blogs HERE and has incredibly interesting posts for anyone interested in the blogging industry. What caught my eye was this post she did about her monthly income update. She has been very successful in a really short period of time. Coming from someone who has been blogging for a couple of years now, I was impressed to say the least! So immediately I had to reach out and see if she would be willing to answer a few questions for all of you and I’m hyped to share this with all of you.

Without further adieu… the interview! A huge thank you to Krista and be sure to check out her blog (on a side note, she’s super nice!).

1. What motivated you to start blogging?

Honestly I’ve been blogging since I was in middle school and maintaining a Livejournal was just the cool thing to do.
But towards the end of last year I was on a nice winter hike with one of my good friends. She had read some of the very passionate posts I wrote on my personal blog. And she asked me, “Do you make money from your blog?”
What?!?! I thought. You can make money blogging?

So earlier this year, in January, I thought about what she said. I started researching more and more about blogging for profit. And I thought, wow. If these people can do it, having not known what they were doing before, so can I.

2. If you had 3 tips to give to a new blogger, what would they be?

1. If you want to earn money blogging, go self-hosted. It’s not a gimmick. Having your own domain and what comes with it makes you look all-around more professional. Plus, with self-hosted WordPress, you can go to great lengths to customize your blog to make a user experience fantastic.

2. Make sure you have all social media platforms for your blog (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Bloglovin, Pinterest, and even Google+). You don’t need to master all of those platforms right away. At the start, choose two to focus on and go from there.

3. Blogging takes a lot of time and organization. Since it does take a lot of time, make sure the niche you choose to write about is something you feel passionate about. At first I had a “style” category on my blog. Then I realized I couldn’t really talk for days about style, because I don’t really have any. Haha!

3. What’s your favorite social media platform, and why?

I LOVE using Facebook. On my Facebook page, I can share stories with my readers. It’s like a mini blog page where I can really get personal and let my readers know what drove me to write an article.

4. What are your goals for your blog? And are you currently blogging full time?

Although I’m not blogging full time, I would LOVE to turn blogging into a career. I might start out consulting first. You know, reviewing others’ blogs and helping them target areas of improvement. I think I have an eye for that. Eventually, I’d like to write an eBook or design a course to help others build a beautiful, successful blog.

Right now, I blog on the side. It’s a little difficult. But, my boyfriend and I rarely have any free time together (I think we share one day off per month! haha). So working on my blog gives me something fulfilling to do in my free time when he’s not around.

5. What do you use to inspire you if you ever hit bloggers-block or get worn out?

If I ever get bloggers block or worn out, I go on a run with my dog or take a day off from blogging. I normally come back refreshed and inspired!

I also have a huge list of ideas to write about (some are okay, some are bad, some are great). So I never worry about what to publish.

Thanks again to Krista for her time and I hope you all enjoy her advice!

Midi Skirt

Hey y’all,

How long does it take for a bad cold to go away?! 3 days.. 3 years? (it feels like the latter)

Today I’m back with my only and FAVORITE midi skirt! I was always skeptical about midi skirts because I’m on the short side. And by on the short side, I mean very short. But I paired this one with a tank bodysuit TWICE in NYC for fashion week. That sounds gross, but I promise it’s not.. ha! I wore it out to dinner one night then for pictures the next day because I loved the way the styles mixed together. A good bodysuit is great for a short event to pair with a high waisted skirt (like this one) or some high waisted shorts or jeans.

These photos were also taken at the High Line park in NYC which is basically just an elevated park above the city. Its right on the water in the midtown/Chelsea area and I would 100% recommend. It has amazing views of the fashion district and the gorgeous waterfront and Jersey. It’s several miles long – we didn’t walk the whole thing – but it’s a gorgeous place to take a nice stroll or stop for some coffee along the way.

NYFW Outfit Diary – DUMBO

Hey y’all,

REALLY long time, no talk! I guess I just needed a break for a few weeks. And then this weekend I came down with a terrible cold/sinus infection and have been glued to the couch or bed – so it’s the perfect time to catch up on this!

But this time I’m back with another NYFW outfit diary – DUMBO edition! One of my must see spots this latest trip to new york was DUMBO – Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. You’ll have an amazing view of downtown, but you’ll still have the quaint and quiet(er) environment of Brooklyn. It has to be my favorite spot I’ve seen yet in NYC. If you’re ever there, we took the subway down and walked about 4 blocks straight towards the pier.

This dress is one of my go-to’s for layering and it’s actually a long sleeved top in xxl.. ha! I got this for a halloween costume a few years ago and it’s still one of my favorite items.

New York Fashion Week – The Trends

Hey y’all,

Today I’m back with my report from New York Fashion Week – The Trends! I’ll be talking the top 3 trends I saw for Fall 2017 at NYFW and then some picks for how you can wear the trends in normal, everyday life.

My vlog went up about a week ago and I’m so excited to finally be able to share my experience. If you have any questions about being invited, the experience, finding a hotel – ANYTHING – leave it in the comments for a post coming up!

1. All about the angles. Sharp lines were all the rage on the runway – from tilted skirt hems to straight edge off-the-shoulder tops. And I have to say, I really like it. There are so many ways to mix angles to flatter any body shape. Go for short angles to accentuate a feature and longer angles to create a long and lean illusion. Angles can also be mixed with more feminine clothing items to mix styles and create an edgy-classic outfit.

2. Mix those materials. Leather with mesh, velvet with silk – mixing materials seemed to appear in every single outfit! This isn’t a new thought in the fashion world, but it’s back with a vengeance. It’s the perfect way to wear a monochromatic outfit but still not look one-dimensional. Mix and match items in this slider.

3. Take risks! I personally felt like all of the styles showcased on the runways were taking risks and pushing boundaries. Personally, the second day of NYFW was when I really pushed myself outside of my comfort zone and wore an outfit I would normally never wear (photographed above). But you just have to werk it! Showcase your personal style no matter what it is and you will look AMAZING! This was the time I felt the most confident and the only time I was photographed by street photographers. Obviously, other people should not make you feel validated – but it’s pretty cool, right?! 🙂 Also, another given that runway styles are going to be pushing limits, but I think it’s a great takeaway and the best inspiration for all of us in our everyday lives to own our personal styles.

I hope you enjoyed my recap of the trends from NYFW! Again – any comments about attending, getting invited, styles, ANYTHING – leave in the comments!

NYFW Style Diary – Outfit 1

Hey y’all! First of all.. Happy Valentine’s Day!

So I know I’ve mentioned it before and if you follow me on social media (which you should) you’re probably tired of me talking about it… but I went to NYFW! It was my first time to ever go, and I feel like I learned so much that will have me crazy ready for next season.

It was honestly such an amazing experience. I’ve always loved fashion shows and local fashion weeks, but going to NYFW was a whole different ball game. It was insanely hectic with tons of people trying to find their seats, check-in workers looking out for celebrities, street style photographers all along the blocks – but I loved it. I ended up going to two shows and unfortunately had to rsvp no to a lot, but I’m kind of glad I got to ease into the experience and spread out the shows so I could really enjoy it.

I have a lot of outfit posts coming up along with other NYFW posts – how to get invited, my experience, top trends I saw – so be sure you stay subscribed! I’m on bloglovin here or you can subscribe via email in my sidebar.

And now onto my NYFW style diary – outfit 1!

These photos were taken at my first show – Hakan Akkaya. I’ll have some recaps of the shows I attended coming up as well! So many posts.. so little time! And yes, I am wearing my camera bag and have my go-pro and barcode in the other hand. Space was limited.. sorry!

Bomber Jacket

Hey y’all and happy Monday!

This is going to be an INSANE week to say the least. Work has been crazy lately and I have a ton to do since it’s a short week for me. I’m off Friday and I’ll be heading to NYC bright and early for NYFW. Be sure to let me know in the comments or on social media what kind of content you’d like to see. It’s my first time at NYFW so I’m very open to suggestions!

Over the weekend I went with a friend to a local fashion event, Crystal Couture. I’ll do a whole separate post with my thoughts about the annual event, but I did want to go ahead and share my outfit from that night. It’s been FREEZING and I’m in love with this bomber jacket. It’s so warm and goes well with pretty much any outfit.

Layers

Hey y’all!

So I just got back from traveling for work. It was warm and sunny in Texas, then I woke up to a few inches of now yesterday in DC! Needless to say my allergies are going absolutely crazy. BUT I only have a couple of weeks before I’ll be in New York for fashion week and I’m beyond excited.

I feel like I’m beating a dead horse mentioning NYFW in every post, but this has been a huge goal of mine for years. I was backstage manager for NWA fashion week and worked a few shows/galas backstage, but this is an amazing opportunity that I’m incredibly thankful to have. Be sure to follow along with my blog here and on snapchat here to come along with me!

This outfit was taken a couple of months ago (oops) playing around with layers for the cooler weather. I love the look of a dress paired with a cozy sweater. In this case, you can even see a collar which is a nice touch for a winter outfit. Additionally, layering a sweater is the perfect way to take a summer dress year-round!

LAZY Sweatshirt

Hey y’all! So in case you didn’t see my announcement post yesterday.. I’m going to NEW YORK FASHION WEEK! In case I didn’t already emphasize it enough, I’m pretty darn excited. Follow along with my blog and youtube channel to come with me on my journey!

In this post, I’m sharing a lazy sweater that I’m obsessed with. I’m normally not huge into a graphic sweatshirt or tee, but this one is insanely comfortable. Instead of wearing it in a usual casual outfit, I decided to dress it up with some booties and a pencil skirt for easier every day use! This pencil skirt is also crazy comfortable.. perfect for a lazy girl! ha!

Lace Skirts + A BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!

Hey y’all and Happy Monday! Do I always have to say what day of the week it is..? Sorry, habit.

Today I’m back with my FAVORITE lace skirt. To be completely honest, I haven’t worn this out as much as I wanted to. I’m the kind of person that gets hesitant to be too dressed up. But I’m absolutely obsessed with the style of a lace midi skirt and I am planning on wearing it to a work dinner later this week – the perfect excuse!

And do I have an announcement for you.. I’m going to NEW YORK FASHION WEEK! This is a life goal item, and I’m beyond excited. I can’t even put into words how big of an honor it is to be invited by a designer, and I’m so excited to bring you along with me. Be sure you’re following me on snapchat @ trendkeeper and on bloglovin so you can come along!

Lace skirts give such a feminine touch to any outfit, and I love pairing them with unexpected items. You could pair this skirt with a ripped white tee or a leather jacket to add a grunge vibe. Or, keep a classic look with a nice tunic.

In my case, I paired it with a nice orange top (and I find orange really hard to wear) and my favorite camel booties. Black and shades of brown do go together, y’all.
